Sony TTS-4000 Turntable w/ SME armYou are looking at a Sony TTS-4000 turntable with an SME 3009 arm and Denon DL103 cartridge. These components are housed on a custom built solid walnut finished base. This is a very rare opportunity to own a very special combination of classic components. These components were regarded as the state of the art in the 1970's - and are still very highly regarded today. I had purchased this equipment new from a professional broadcast supplier in the mid 1970's. I have stored this turntable since about 1985. You can find many articles on the Internet about each of these components. This system will out-perform many other current systems costing tens of thousands of dollars. This system served as a broadcast standard for many radio stations and studios. I have only seen two other TTS-4000's for sale in the past six years. They both sold for well over $ 2,500. Turntable: Sony TTS-4000 Specifications: System: aluminum die cast, 32cm / 1,75kg Motor: Direct Drive Servo-controlled AC motor Speeds: 33 1/3 & 45rpm Pitch control range: ±3% Wow&flutter: less than 0,03% RMS S/N ratio: 60dB (JP spec) 62dB (DE spec) 65dB (DE spec, DIN 45544) Full speed ahead: 1,8 s. Componentry: 1 IC 7 transistors 11 diodes Multivoltage: Yes Weight: 8,5kg (JP spec) 18kg (DE spec!) Dimensions: 33,5 x 33,5 x 12,9cm Height above/below base: 3,7cm / 9,2cm List price: 65,000¥ (1972) Please check this site for information and manuals for the Sony TTS-4000 turntable.

Tonearm: SME 3009 Series II Improved Specifications: The name SME was almost synonymous with the tonearm. Modern audiophiles are often more inclined towards the "3009 Series II Improved" model that is the same basic arm as the 3009, but has an integrated headshell minimizing resonance and lowering the effective mass to 6,5 grams. (you can get counterweights for the S2 improved series if you want to use heavier pickups). Original cost $295. Please check this site for an enormous amount of information on the SME tonearm.

Cartridge: Denon DL-103D "Low output, Moving Coil stereo cartridge. The greatly improved model in the 103 series, taking performance to the limit of the original 103 design. A high performance cartridge with a flat frequency response as high as over 65KHz and with high trackability at low stylus force owing to the greatly reduced effective mass of vibration system viewed from stylus point. The double-construction tapered cantilever has excellent stiffness properties. The improved tracing performance is giving you the power and dynamics of recordings at a scale you never thought possible. This was accomplished by an employment of a high-rigidity and extra thin double construction conical cantilever, and a solid diamond stylus tip of 0.1mm square section." "The DL-103 is a high performance moving coil type stereo cartridge. Its outstanding performance has been recognized by many critics and audiophiles. Developed by Denon in collaboration with the Japan Broadcasting Corporation technical research laboratories as a high performance, high reliability phono cartridge for broadcasting purposes, the DL-103 has been in use for a long time in public and commercial AM and FM broadcasting stations." Note: This is a used cartridge. To obtain the original (good) performance, you will need to replace the cartridge with a new one. Specifications: Frequency Response: 20-65,000 Hz Separation: Greater than 28db Recommended Tracking force: 1.5gms +- 0.2gms Cantilever: Aluminum Tapered Pipe Output: 0.2mv Stylus Type: Elliptical Diamond Stylus Radius: 0.1mm Weight: 7.5gms Original Price: $499 Please check this site for information and manuals for the Sony TTS-4000 turntable.

The base and cover The above components are mounted in a custom built base and cover. The sides of the base are made of solid 1/2in. walnut. The platter side is made of 3/4in. walnut veneered plywood. The bottom of the base is made of 3/4in. plywood. The cover is made of 1/2in. solid walnut and stained Plexiglas. The cover is normally hinged to the base. I took the cover off, because it is easier to operate the turntable without the cover on. The base sits on four adjustable composite/rubber feet. The base and cover have some minor scratches - which can be refinished quite easily. Special Notes (and the fine print): The Sony turntable, SME tonearm and Shure V15 cartridge were purchased and installed approximately 30 years ago (mid 70's). The Denon cartridge replaced the original Shure V15 around 1978. This system was used daily until around 1983. The turntable and tonearm are in excellent condition. The Denon cartridge needs to be replaced - which can be found by searching the Internet. I will only ship the system disassembled and packaged in two large double packed boxes. This equipment is fragile to bumps and vibrations. I would not ship the system assembled as shown in the first photo. The system has only been moved a couple of times - and I will not leave it up to the shipping company's rough handling to damage this system on it's way to you. Again, I insist that the system be disassembled and packaged properly. The turntable will be in one box, and the base, cover and SME tonearm will be in a separate box. That means that you will have to assemble the system when you get it. I have good news. It takes less that 45 minutes to mount the components and wire and setup the tonearm. The assembly is very straight ahead. Stuff can only fit and be plugged in one way. A copy of the assembly and setup manuals will be included. The only thing that will take some work will be refinishing the base and cover - if you thing it needs it. You will notice that the SME tonearm is missing a finger lift. The finger lift was removed by the technician who originally assembled this turntable. He claimed that this reduced the mass of the tonearm - which is a good thing. I checked with SME to see if the finger lift was still available. They had none on hand. They suggested I speak with one of their engineers - or, look for a finger lift on the Internet. The arm is very useable without the finger lift. Depending on where the turntable will be shipped to, the shipping costs will be calculated once I receive the shipping address. The two parcels will weigh approximately 30 pounds each. I will not ship this system - PERIOD - unless it is insured. I will let you know the shipping and insurance charges - once I know your destination. |

JVC TD-V711 Semi-Pro 3-Head Cassette Deck +MoreYou are looking at a JVC TD-V711 Semi-Pro Cassette Deck. This was one of a series of semi-pro cassette decks that Sansui produced in the late 1980's. I used this deck from 1988 to 1992 for making master cassettes. It has been sitting idle since then. This deck is built like a brick sh_t house. It is very well appointed - including wooden side panels. This is a great opportunity to obtain one of the better decks that were made before cassette became obsolete. The original manual is included with this auction. Harman Kardon Citation 12 power amp. This HK amp works well and is in good condition for its age! There is a very low level hum - could use new caps. The paint only has a few minor scratches. The lettering on the placard is very nice. If weight and heat dissipation were signs of quality, this amp would be the winner hands down. This amp weighs almost as much as my older tube-type Citation II. It is rated at 60 watts RMS per channel. It has very tight low end, and clear highs! Basically, this amplifier is sure to please. |

NAD 1700 Monitor Series tuner/preamp. This tuner/preamp was their very best in the late 80's to mid 90's (The equivalent of their Silver Series today). The 1700 is considered to be their first and best preamp/tuner, and it is a perfect example of the Monitor Series no compromise design. The NAD 1700 has inputs for Phono (MM & MC), Tape 1 and Tape 2. It features bass EQ, Mono, Low Level, infrasonic filter (switchable) and 2-way tape dubbing. The retail price of the 1700 was more than $800. Everything works flawlessly. All the lights work and the cosmetics are perfect except for one small (very hard to see) scratch on the top front plate. You can see from the picture that the unit is missing a small plastic cap for the knob at the front. This does not affect the unit at all (can be ordered from NAD). There are also two RCA jacks on the back that need to be replaced. This preamp sounds very good. |

TWO Tannoy 3836 Dual Concentric Drive units. THE PRICE SHOWN IS FOR TWO TANNOY 3836 SPEAKERS. You are looking at a pair of Tannoy 3836 15 inch PcQ Point Source Dual Concentric Drive units. These are the drivers used in the commercial CPA15 system - and are identical in performance to the driver used in the System 15 DMT monitors which cost well over $5,000. The 3836 speaker is currently the most widely used Tannoy speaker on Broadway and on the London stage. This is due to its incredible performance, wonderful sound and reliability. These speakers were used as spares in a traveling Broadway production audio system for Phantom of the Opera. As you can see from the pictures, the speakers will need 2-way crossovers and enclosures. The following links have a very useful design for an enclosure and crossover network:

These speakers - without a doubt - are "the best high
sensitivity speakers available for under $10,000." I have recently been in
contact with a knowledgeable chap from NZ who owns a pair of these. He
claims that these drivers are the same ones that were used in the $ 14,000
Tannoy Churchill speakers. |

This Business of Music and More About This Business of Music. From Library Journal Published since 1964, This Business of Music is recognized as the industry textbook, and Krasilovsky, a music and copyright lawyer, offers broad and deep treatment of contracts, royalties, loans, tax issues, videos, and copyright. The new edition presents the industry in four parts: an overview, the record industry, music writers and publishers, and other aspects of the business. The coverage of technology makes sense of recent and coming changes to the laws affecting the industry, the new music delivery mechanisms, and the impact on the organizations that oversee performance rights. The writing is clear, and Krasilovsky presents complicated legal, financial, and strategic information without oversimplifying. An exceptionally rich appendix reprints important primary-source documents. Both books are excellent references that improve and expand upon the earlier editions. More About will be most appreciated by performers and writers, while This Business will be helpful to those who work on the business side. DJoan Pedzich, Harris Beach & Wilcox, Rochester, NY This Business of Music contains 38 very readable, information packed chapters and 27 appendixes. THE CRAFT OF PHOTOGRAPHY. A complete, systematic course in black-and-white technique for beginners and advanced students alike. "Vestal accomplishes his announced intention-that of providing a comprehensive guide-with quite extraordinary lucidity. The result is best described by that classical reviewer's expression, 'I found myself unable to put the book down.'.. This book is a true manual." -W. L. Broecker, Exposure "If there are things about black-and-white photography that David Vestal has not revealed in his book, we can't imagine what they are. Vestal tells us in nearly 400 densely packed pages everything you need to know about cameras, lenses, light meters, darkrooms, films, and all the esoterica that go into producing a fine photograph."-MBA "This is one of the best basic books on photography available.... Vestal's technical explanations ... help the reader with a multi-dimensional view of what he is doing and why." -Jack Manning Camera View, The New York Times |
